Yes, I knew about this! Actually, the first time I experienced this was a few years ago, in my children's first grade classroom. They had what they call 'Authors Party' where the parents were invited and the children read their creative writing prompt out loud. In first grade they had four classrooms in one big hall with dividers. So this is the way we were requested to applaud at the end of each child's presentations, so that the other classes doing the same would not be disturbed. I remember thinking how amazingly well put-together these presentations were and impressed with how they thought of using this method.
Didn't know it but have you noticed that many times during a rock concert that's also how people show their appreciation.
