Social commentators have relied on several indicators to get a taste of the zeitgeist; google search trends, metro-station graffiti, twitter tags, lavatory engravings and so on. I think there's another neglected source that gives a pulse of my city; the slogans at the back of auto-rickshaws. Social indicators or not, they are bloody amusing and here's the first of what I hope to be a series.

there was a design study on the "typical, Indian lorries - colorful artwork, decorations and such slogans". The research stated how these 'lorries' were a medium of mass education especially in rural areas of social messages. E.g. the famous 'family planning' drive we went through - the 'hum do humarey do' slogan were on every other lorry.
'Save water'
(I read one behind a water tanger: "Pure water is a gift of Nature. When nature fails, call us." :)
What those truckies think while they pay to get something painted interest me a lot. The fact that they actually pay to get a slogan painted ... would suggest that they strongly believe in it.... or do they ?
very interesting...i will keep a look out for more
